The appendix of the first edition of this textbook (Smith and Sherman 1994) assembled pharmacokinetic information on a diverse assortment of drugs.

Many additional drugs and studies have become available in recent years, making the annotated bibliography format used in the first edition cumbersome. In addition, the advent of the internet, with ready access to veterinary databases, has made retrieval of information on pharmacokinetic studies much easier. In lieu of providing pharmacokinetic data on selected drugs, this appendix lists the drug dosages discussed in each chapter of the current edition in tabular form for easy reference. Some of the drugs included are not available in the United States. Other available drugs are prohibited in goats because the species is classified as a food animal (Payne et al. 1999). The table is not comprehensive relative to the text, as numerous drugs are mentioned in the text that have been assessed only experimentally, or for which dosages offered have not been established but are extrapolated from other species, mainly sheep and cattle. Therefore, for the therapeutic management of any specific disease identified in the table, the full discussion on treatment for that condition should be reviewed in the relevant chapter.

Information on pharmacokinetic terminology is retained from the first edition, to aid the reader in interpreting the literature. Pharmacodynamics, the study of the biochemical and physiologic effects of drugs and the mechanisms of their actions, is a separate topic and beyond the scope of this appendix. It should be noted that knowledge of the pharmacokinetics of a drug in goats is helpful for selecting a route of administration and a dosing interval and for estimating withdrawal times (WTs), but does not directly address the question of efficacy of a given dose. Clinical experience, in addition to pharmacokinetic data, must be taken into consideration (Martinez 1998d).
