Clinical signs of SMALL INTESTINAL DISEASE

The most common clinical signs associated with chronic small intestinal disease are diarrhea and weight loss. Vomiting is common in inflammatory disorders, and intermittent inappetence, listlessness, borborygmus, flatulence, trembling, and signs of abdominal pain are also important symptoms.

signs of abdominal pain may be subtle and not obvious to the owner. in association with marked hypoproteinemia resulting from infiltrative intestinal diseases (protein-losing enteropathy), signs may include pitting subcutaneous edema, ascites, or dyspnea associated with hydrothorax.

Colonic disorders are a common cause of diarrhea. Diarrhea of large intestinal origin should be differentiated clinically from small intestinal causes because work-up and treatment often differ (see Chapter 8).
