In diabetic dogs, the median survival is 24 months and 33% of animals live >3years. In the cat, median survival after initial diagnosis is 17 months. Cats that achieve remission have longer survival, whereas kidney failure is a negative prognostic factor; ketoacidosis is not associated with survival (Callegari et al.
2013). The quality of life of dogs and cats with DM is good if treatment is tightly administered.
