Whereas the significance of the accessory glands is not clear, if they become diseased the quality of the ejaculated semen may deteriorate rapidly. In vesiculitis in the bull, white blood cells and bacteria enter the ejaculate and kill the spermatozoa. Enlargement of the prostate gland can interfere with the passage of faeces through the rectum or urine along the urethra.
