Plate 1: Tissue Types

(Numbers 1, 3, 7, 10, and 12 are from Bacha & Wood, Color Atlas of Veterinary Histology, Lea & Febiger, 1990, used with permission of Wiley-Blackwell.

Numbers 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 11 are courtesy of Sandra Pitcaithley, DVM.)

1. Simple cuboidal epithelial lining the collecting tubules of the kidney.

2. Simple columnar epithelium of the colonic mucosa.

3. Pseudostratified columnar epithelium characteristic of respiratory epithelium. Note ciliated surface.

4. Stratified squamous epithelium, nonkeratinized.

5. Transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder.

6. Dense, regular connective tissue in a longitudinal section of tendon.

7. Areolar (loose) connective tissue from mesentery. Note the fine elastic fibers and thicker collagen fibers. A capillary runs from top to bottom in this view. Most cells outside the capillary are fibroblasts.

8. Adipose (fat) tissue.

9. Hyaline cartilage.

10. Bone in cross-section. Osteocytes reside in small lacunae in the concentric circles of the Haversian system.

11. Skeletal muscle in longitudinal section.

12. Smooth muscle in the wall of a medium-sized artery. The lumen of the artery is at the top of the micrograph; muscle cells lie just beneath the endothelium of the vessels. Darker pink is the elastic tunica adventitia outside the muscle.

1. Canine red blood cells (erythrocytes). In the center of the field are small, dark-staining, enucleate platelets.

2. Canine neutrophil.

3. Equine basophil (left) and neutrophil (right). Small platelets and red blood cells are also seen.

4. Equine eosinophil.

5. Bovine eosinophil.

6. From left to right: neutrophil, monocyte, and lymphocyte.

7. From left to right: two lymphocytes and a monocyte.

8. Low-power micrograph of feline blood showing a variety of blood cell types: 1) red blood cell, 2) eosinophil, 3) lymphocyte, 4) monocyte, 5) neutrophil, 6) platelets.
