Cell Theory

Cell theory is one of the fundamental ideas of biology.

German scientists Theodor Schwann, Matthias Schleiden, and Rudolph Virchow formulated the theory.

Tenets to the Cell Theory: Schwann and Schleiden first stated that

• The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function in living things.

• All organisms are made up of one or more cells.

Later, Virchow stated the third tenet

• ‘Omnis cellula e cellula’ i.e. ‘All cells arise from pre-existing cells’.

Modern Cell Theory

• Energy flow occurs within cells.

• Heredity information (DNA) is passed on from cell to cell.

• All cells have the same basic chemical composition.
