PHYSICAL FEATURES OF THE GIT IN DIFFERENT ANIMALS

The digestive tracts of various animals exhibit remarkable diversity in structure and function. Dogs possess a relatively short and uncomplicated digestive tract, highlighted by an ileocecal valve and a small cecum.

In contrast, pigs feature a simple stomach similar to dogs, yet their small and large intestines are comparatively longer. Notably, the pig’s cecum and colon showcase sacculations known as haustrae, enhancing the retention of digesta. Equines stand out for their exceptionally large colon, facilitating efficient digestion. Among domestic and laboratory animals, sheep boast the longest small intestines in proportion to their body size. However, sheep lack sacculations or significant voluminos- ity in their cecum and colon, distinguishing them from other species (Table 15.1). These variations underscore the adaptation of digestive systems to different dietary and physiological needs across animal taxa (Lentle and Janssen, 2008)
