The Vagina (Figures 14.1-14.4)

The vagina is the section of the female tract between the cervix and the vestibule. The cranial end of the vagina is enclosed by peritoneum. The peritoneal recess that lies between the vagina and rectum is the rectoperitoneal pouch; the corresponding recess between the vagina and the urinary bladder is the vesicogenital pouch.

The rest of the vagina is retroperitoneal, and the vagina is within the pelvic cavity. The vaginal cervix projects into the vagina in all the domestic species except the pig; this forms the recess of the vaginal fornix when present.

The lining epithelium of the vagina is a stratified squamous mucous membrane that is thrown into longitudinal folds. This epithelium thickens and cornifies during proes- trus and oestrus, the cornified cells being shed after oestrus.
