The goat that is healthy one night and found dead the next morning poses a particular problem for the owner and the veterinarian.

If an explanation for the death cannot be found, appropriate steps cannot be taken to prevent additional losses. On the other hand, a full necropsy by a diagnostic pathologist may be expensive. Not all owners are eager to pay much to get a diagnosis if the condition seems to be sporadic, and if the rest of the herd is not at risk. Note that in Germany and possibly other countries, on-farm necropsies by owners or private veterinarians are forbidden by law, to avoid poten­tial contamination of the environment with body fluids laden with infectious organisms. Thus, local regulations supersede the advice presented in this chapter.
