Introduction

There are various ophthalmic conditions that can become chronic and require diligent therapy and monitoring. This chapter will discuss the most common chronic, incurable but manageable ophthalmic diseases such as dry eye and glaucoma, as well as some of the less commonly encountered “chronicopa- thies” of the eyes.

Chronic ocular and adnexal disease in the companion animal requires a uniquely dedicated owner if optimal outcomes are to be achieved. It is the responsibility of the veterinarian to educate clients in the need for diligent care and monitoring. Ocular pain is a profound impediment to life quality and this fact is consistently under-recognized by both the pet-owning public and the veterinary community.
