Introduction
Modern histopathology emphasizes the definitive diagnosis in the live patient for a rational therapeutic regimen and - possibly - the prevention of disease. The accessibility of the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) to direct visualization by endoscopy has generated a considerable increase in the number of biopsy samples, a trend that is expected to continue as a result of advancing technology and quality of care in small animal medicine.
The clinician expects detailed, reliable, and relevant information from the mucosal biopsy specimens. This requires significant expertise of the histopathologist with the interpretation of gastrointestinal biopsies. But it also requires for the clinician to provide representative material as well as all relevant clinical data, as a lack of clinical information complicates the interpretation of biopsy specimens.1.8.2
