Introduction

Horses, cattle, and other large animal species evolved as grazing herbivorous animals, meeting energy and nutritional needs with forage, salt, and water. In most cases, feeding based on teleologic principals is best, unless the individual is unwilling or unable to eat. There are little data on feeding critically ill or hospitalized large animal species and its association with or effect on morbidity and mortality or hospital stay.
