PHYSICAL EXAMINATION AND DIAGNOSTICS Approaches to physical examination and diagnostic testing are discussed in Holz (2008), Vitali and Monaghan (2008) and Vogelnest and Allan (2015). Capture

and restraint for examination are discussed in Chapter 9.

4.1 Clinical pathology

Reference ranges for haematology and serum biochemistry parameters for several dasyurid species can be found in Appendix 1.

Significant differences in haematological and biochemical parameters related to age, sex, season and free-ranging versus managed status have been demonstrated in Tasmanian devils (Peck et al. 2015; Hope and Peck 2016; Stannard et al. 2016). Stannard et al. (2013) investigated the effects of biological factors on routine blood chemistry and haematological parameters in eastern and spotted-tailed quolls and found seasonal variation in total bilirubin, glucose, creatinine and potassium in eastern quolls, as well as age-related variation in alkaline phosphatase. No sex-related differences were observed. Eastern quolls also showed a high number of annular neutrophils.
