Quality ofLife
Prior to the elucidation of the role of adherent and invasive E.coli, and the response to antibiotic therapy, this condition had a very grave prognosis. Usually there was minimal response reported to dietary modification, sulfasalazine, and immunosuppressive therapy.
As early as when the disease was described in dogs, the outcome improved in instances where multimodal therapy, including antibiotics like chloramphenicol and tylosin were included in the protocol (Van Kruiningen et al. 1965). Treatment with enrofloxacin will lead to a rapid resolution and durable remission in dogs (Hostutler et al. 2004). Appropriate use of medications, specifically adequate duration of treatment, and compliance of owner and patient will help overcome resistant strains of E. coli. The importance of adequate dose regimens should be emphasized to owners, as the clinical manifestation of antibioticresistant strains will lead to antibiotic refractory clinical signs.
