EXPANDED COVERAGE OF AVIAN TOPICS
Because poultry are important components of the agricultural industry and pet birds are increasingly more prevalent as components of veterinary medical practices, avian topics are covered in those chapters where their anatomy and physiology are decidedly different.
This expanded coverage has been done for the chapters on the kidney, respiration, digestion, and male and female reproduction. The study aids, self-evaluation exercises, liberal use of figures and tables, and suggested reading references provide elements needed for independent study. Accordingly, this edition can be a valuable support to those courses that teach anatomy and physiology of domestic animals and as a bridge to more advanced courses in animal science and veterinary medicine.

Acknowledgments
The First Edition of this book was developed from my perceived need while teaching a physiology of domestic animals course to undergraduate students, most of whom were in the College of Agriculture. My time teaching this course spanned approximately 25 years and involved close to 4,500 students. I am indebted to those students for the inspiration they provided and for assisting me in my personal and professional development. I am also indebted to Dr Peter Holmes, University of Glasgow, School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Physiology, for accepting my sabbatical visit and for providing administrative support and a stimulating environment in which to work while I drafted the manuscript for the First Edition. Administrative and resource support was continued with the First, Second, Third, Fourth, and now the Fifth Edition, by the Biomedical Sciences Department (formerly Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology), College of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State University.
It is humbling to experience the production of a textbook and realize the team effort and friendly cooperation of so many talented people.
It is to these people of the Fifth Edition that I now recognize and extend my sincere appreciation.Dr Eric Rowe, Associate Professor, Biomedical Sciences Department, College of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State University, consented to co-author with me for the Fifth Edition. His teaching of veterinary anatomy to veterinary students, coupled with veterinary medical practice experience, technology skills, enthusiasm, and great interest, has provided a dimension of need.
A very important improvement for the Fifth Edition is full-color for all of the figures. The coloring for this was begun by Jennifer Hunt, Biological/Pre-medical Illustration Senior at Iowa State University. Her work was continued for the majority of coloring for the remaining figures by Sarah Mientka, Biological/Pre-Medical Illustration Senior at Iowa State University. In addition to coloring, Sarah created several figures. Dr Rowe and I are grateful and proud of the skills of Jennifer and Sarah.
Dr Anumantha Kanthasamy, Distinguished Professor and Chair, Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State University, provided encouragement, office resources, and the medical illustration services of the senior students to this project. My former deans of the College of Veterinary Medicine,.Dr Phillip Pearson, Dr Richard Ross, Dr John Thomson, and our present dean, Dr Lisa Nolan, have provided enthusiastic support.
Linda Erickson, administrative specialist, Department of Biomedical Sciences, was in the background as a liaison for my needs for the first four editions. Her role in fulfilling the office functions are now capably provided by Shelly Loonan, Administrative Specialist, who is assisted by Kim Adams, Account Clerk, William Robertson, Program Coordinator, and Emma Hashman, Program Assistant.
Kristi Schaaf, Director, Veterinary Medical Library, Iowa State University, was a friendly, knowledgeable resource for location of reference material and other information as needed.
Also helpful were Lana Greve, Library Assistant, and veterinary student assistants.Dean Biechler created the animal silhouettes used in the cover design for the first edition when he was employed as an artist by Biomedical Communications at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. These elegant silhouettes continued to be identified with the Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Editions.
John Wiley & Sons, Inc., our publisher, and their team of experts were involved from the point of commissioning to publication. This has involved Justinia Wood, Senior Commissioning Editor, Veterinary Medicine and Equine Studies, Erica Judisch, Executive Editor, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry, and Purvi Patel, Project Editor, who has provided recommendations and assistance from the beginning through to submission. Nancy Turner, as Senior Development Editor, preceded Purvi Patel as project editor for the Fourth Edition and with preliminary assistance for the Fifth Edition. The production process following manuscripts submission involved Baljinder Kaur, Project Manager, Audrey Koh, Production Editor, and Patricia Bateson, Copy Editor.
Many publishers and authors gave permission to use their illustrations. Our thanks to them are conveyed with a credit line to the source.
The memory of my wife, Shirley, was important to me as an incentive for continuation with the Third Edition. She was a great listener when I “bounced” ideas or problems to her. Her memory for this has continued during the preparation of the Fourth and Fifth Editions.
Above all, I thank God for these people with whom I have worked and for the privilege of continuing a productive life.
