EXPERIMENT ON LABORATORY LARGE ANIMALS
Farm animals, or FAs, are commonly utilised in scientific research for investigations into animal husbandry, basic safety, veterinary and agricultural science, and comparative and translational medicine.
Since many organs’ anatomical features, sizes, and functions are essentially the same in FAs and humans, FAs make highly interesting models for studying human diseases. Examples of this include the use of sheep as a surgical model in orthopaedic studies and pigs in cardiovascular or transplantation research. Moreover, transgenic FA models are getting easier to obtain and are being employed more often. FAs are especially helpful comparison models since they can produce results with great biological relevance and, in some cases, are even dual-use because they promote improvements in both animal and human health (Figure 26.7 & Figure 26.8).26.9
