INTRODUCTION

Receptors are found in the taste buds of all the animals.

Canines as example of taste receptors: Table 13.1 describes three major types of receptors, as shown in the table, which are present in animals.

There is a protrusion on the dorsal and lateral surface of the tongue, the same receptors on human tongues. Dogs sense sweet, salt, sour and bitter tastes. They don’t have a liking for salt due to the absence of sensitivity to salt receptors.

Taste buds of different species: Different species have different numbers of taste buds, with humans having the highest number of taste buds compared to dogs, as shown in the Table 13.2. Cats have the lowest number of taste buds compared to dogs.

Different tastes are located in different parts of the ani­mal’s tongue, as shown in Table 13.3.
