Techniques available for imaging of the abdomen and the pelvis of the domestic mammals include radiography, magnetic resonance, computed tomography and ultrasonography.

However, each technique has its application and particular indication. In general veterinary practice, it is likely that radiography will find the main use. Although all the procedures are used in the domestic species, it is in the dog and cat that they are more frequently useful with less indication for the equine abdomen because of patient size.

However, diagnostic imaging is now undertaken routinely in equine practice for investigation of numerous clinical conditions including colic and weight loss. In this species it is also used for certain interventional procedures such as ultrasound- guided liver biopsy and surgical procedures such as laparoscopic cryptorchidectomy or ovariectomy. Abdominal radiography is useful in equine patients for identifying sand impactions of the large colon.
