The presence of mammary glands is a defining characteristic of mammals. The original purpose of these specialized glands was to produce milk to feed progeny.

However, milk has excellent nutritional qualities and several breeds of cattle, goats, and sheep are bred primarily to produce milk that is used for human consumption. Diseases of the mammary gland thus have important repercussions not only for animal health but also for the well-being of humans.
