The intestines occupy the greater part of the abdominal cavity. The small intestine is unremarkable, but the large intestine is greatly modified and enlarged.

It provides the reservoir for microbial fermentation and assumes a form and disposition that make it difficult to recognize the homologies of its parts with those of the gut of other species. However, these may be deduced from the attachments and arterial supply and confirmed by refer­ence to the development.
