A thick layer of subcutaneous fat obscures most underlying features of the trunk of the pig, making it generally impossible to recognize the extent of the flank on simple inspection.
Occasionally, and then most often in heavily pregnant sows, there is a slight bulging behind the last rib. At the other limit, the thigh and flank fold conceal the caudal part of the abdomen where it tapers to its junction with the pelvis.
