TYPES OF MUSCLE CONTRACTION BASED ON CHANGES IN THE LENGTH OF MUSCLE FIBRES OR TENSION OF THE MUSCLE
Muscular contraction is divided into two types based on the change in the length of muscle fibres or tension of the muscle: 1. Isotonic Contraction: Isotonic contraction is a type of muscular contraction where the tension remains constant, and the length of the muscle fibre is changed.
For instance, during the simple flexion of the arm, the muscle fibres shorten without a change in tension.2. Isometric Contraction: Isometric contraction is a type of muscular contraction where the length of muscle fibres remains the same, and the tension is increased. An example of muscle stiffness and strain occurs when a heavy object is pulled, causing increased tension in the muscles without changing their length. These contractions play a crucial role in understanding muscle function during various activities and exercises. They are essential in maintaining posture, generating force, and enabling movement.7.11
