URINARY SYSTEM

The kidneys lie retroperitoneally on either side of the midline and are often surrounded by dense adipose tissue on the caudal and medial borders. In the female the broad ligament, which also contains abundant fat, is attached to the ventral aspect of the kidney.

The left kidney is more caudal than the right. The renal pelvis is large and there is a single longitudinal papilla (Breazile & Brown 1976; Cooper & Schiller 1975d).

The urinary bladder is large, saclike and triangular in shape (Cooper & Schiller 1975d). The alkaline urine is thick

and cloudy white, containing calcium carbonate and ammo­nium phosphate crystals. In the female the external urethra is separate from the vagina.
