Ear
The external ear canal has a vertical and a horizontal portion. On the medial side of the pinna there is a conchal eminence that may interfere with advancing an otoscope into the vertical ear canal.
The vertical portion continues to the external opening of the osseous ear canal, with the beginning of the turn to the horizontal portion immediately before reaching the opening. The horizontal portion of the ear canal is narrow and surrounded by the petrous temporal bone. To further complicate viewing the deepest part of the osseous horizontal ear canal using standard otoscopic equipment, the canal is very narrow and makes a medial and ventral turn before reaching the tympanic membrane. To visualize the deepest part of the external ear canal, flexible equipment may be necessary. The position of the external acoustic meatus, and its relationship to the tympanic bulla, is shown in Fig. 38.14.
