Much of the surface of the skull can be palpated because it is either directly subcutaneous or covered only by a thin layer of muscle.
Palpable features of the face include the infraorbital and mental foramina and the ridge over the long root of the upper canine tooth. In the cat the infraorbital foramen is small and not easily found on palpation; it lies very close to the orbit.
